Elwick Place

Ashford, England

Ashford's new leisure complex designed by Holloway Studio, featuring a time-responsive facade lighting installation.

Light IQ was commissioned to design the lighting for the exterior of this vast leisure and entertainment complex in the centre of town. The design process involved a close collaboration with the architects, with full scale mock-ups and tests in order to confirm the final lighting effects and specifications for the perforated metal panels. These panels allow visual access to the activities - shape, scale and brightness, that happen inside the complex, whilst the soft, warm glow of lighting within these panels acts as a filter to either emphasise the architecture or homogenise the elevations during the centre's opening hours. It only when the venue is closed to the public that the transparency of the facade and the lighting to the panels demonstrate the lack of activity within.
We also designed the lighting for the public realm areas outside, including the pedestrian routes, hard and soft landscape, feature seating and "photographic" moments that were part of the brief by both the developer and the architect.
