One of the most beautiful farmhouse renovations in the English countryside, by John Pawson.
A wonderful 7 year collaboration between Light IQ and John Pawson, which resulted in impeccable lighting details and an a beautiful atmosphere in both indoor and outdoor spaces. The focus was to keep the light sources completely concealed or seamlessly integrated into the architecture. Light IQ developed a series of custom made miniature spotlights that were discreetly integrated into the 100 year old wooden beams, in order to create accent lighting in the various rooms. In addition, custom trim-less miniature uplights were also created to softly glow selected features of the house.
This was supplemented by carefully installed linear LED lighting (more than 400 metres of the same batch of linear LED tape (to ensure colour and quality consistency) above the wooden trusses and beams in the old roof structure. The beautiful, warm glow of the LEDs provides adequate general lighting as well as a gentle wash that makes every single room of the farmhouse become 'a lantern' after dark, when seen from outside.
A meticulously collection of floor and table lamps, selected by Light IQ and the Pawson's, supplements the architectural lighting. In some rooms, these decorative elements are the main source of lighting, as there was no scope of adding architectural lighting details to the existing building fabric.
The exterior lighting is minimal, naturally. Only selected pathways and landscape features (a couple of significant trees, the lake and a historic wall) were illuminated. The purpose was not only to keep the design simple and discreet but also to minimise light pollution in an area where there is little or no lighting after dark.
